Day 3: I Don’t Answer To You

About The Song

I used to argue.  Now I just write songs. Besides sometimes arguing is as effective as trying to have a conversation about neuroscience with a monkey.

I wrote this song just after an argument. Yet another argument with the same person and towards the end of it I thought to myself “Why on earth am I going around and around trying to convince this person when it’s clear they’ve already made up their mind? Nothing I say is actually going to make any difference and at the end of the day, I don’t answer to this person. I don’t have to argue.  I don’t even have to converse”.

You don’t have to justify yourself to anyone.  You don’t have to justify yourself to anyone

Let that sink for a bit.

I refuse to play victim.

I refuse to play whore.

You don’t dictate to me who I am anymore.

You’ve painted mE guilty - what else can I do?

I’m not playing your games.  I don’t answer to you.

Sometimes people just need someone to blame.  They can’t be convinced.  You’re the bad guy in their story and nothing you say will change that.  What do you do when you’re actually innocent?

Lyrics

You’ve pushed me right to the edge

Contorted and twisted words that I’ve said

It’s just like you’re waiting to see what I’m gonna do

Or maybe you want me to hurt cos it’s still hurting you

But I refuse to play victim I refuse to play whore

You don’t dictate to me who I am anymore

You’ve painted me guilty, what else can I do?

I’m not playing your games I don’t answer to you

I’ve told you I’m sorry, til I’ve blue in the face

With a miguided conviction you’d forgive me someday

But something is telling me you wanna hang on to the pain

Like it’s the one thing that justifies you righteously shifting the blame

But I refuse to play victim I refuse to play whore

You don’t dictate to me who I am anymore

You’ve painted me guilty, what else can I do?

I’m not playing your games I don’t answer to you

To You….

And if you wanna carry on like a child

You can do it on your own time

It’s just like you’re waiting to see what I’m gonna do

But I refuse to play victim I refuse to play whore

You don’t dictate to me who I am anymore

You’ve painted me guilty, what else can I do?

I’m not playing your games I don’t answer to you
