Essential Oils

I am passionate about essential oils for a couple of reasons.  The main one is completely selfish: synthetic fragrances give me migraines.

i can't handle the smell of those sickly sweet fragranced candles.  They literally make me sick.  I can't walk into the stores that sell them and even walking past some of them I walk as far away as I can because spending five minutes in one of those shops can literally give me a migraine. I'm not joking - and if you're a person who is highly sensitive to these sorts of things you know I'm telling the truth.  I FEEL YOU.

I also can't wear perfume.  So I wear an organic deodorant and for extra bang I wear some essential oils (LEMON is my ultimate favourite).

I also like my house to smell nice and I can't handle fragranced sprays, or cleaning products.  There is a good reason for this: most of them are toxic.  Now I don't want to bang on about all the different toxins (that said I do do that elsewhere).  I'm just telling you this because this is one of my main reasons that I love essential oils: THEY DON'T MAKE ME SICK.

I smell nice, my house smells nice and I'm not poisoning myself, my air, my kids, my home or my environment.  This is becoming more and more important to me the more educated that I get in this area (if you really want to go deeper with this I have a whole podcast devoted to it which I will link to soon).

Basically, essential oils are a SAFE, non-toxic way for me to enjoy natural fragrance.  I believe that this is important for everyone (even those of you who aren't as sensitive as me). So - I'm sharing a little bit about them.

ESSENTIAL OILS (MY DISCLAIMER)

If I sell any oils through doTERRA, I make a commission. This is important for you to know.  I'm telling you this so you know up front that should you click on any links they will go directly to my sales page.  That said I don't care where you buy your essential oil from as long as it's PURE.  If you take me seriously (and I hope you do), just make sure that wherever you get them from they are a company that is reputable and that they are using only the purest, therapeutic oils.  I know that this is what doTerra do; hence why I advocate.  Do your research. Some companies mix essential oil with synthetic fragrances or other compounds. You can literally tell the difference in the smell (let alone what you're putting into your airways). Look around.  For me the choice was simple because doTERRA has the widest range, the most amount of information and the highest quality (and for me all three things were important).  Here are some of my absolute favourites and I'll be updating these really soon:

LEMON ESSENTIAL OIL

Lemon is a powerful cleansing agent that purifies the air and surfaces, and can be used as a non-toxic cleaner throughout the home. When added to water, Lemon provides a refreshing and healthy boost throughout the day. Lemon is frequently added to food to enhance the flavor of desserts and main dishes.

When diffused, Lemon is very uplifting and energizing and has been shown to help improve mood.

To tell you the truth I love lemon completely aside from its therapeutic qualities.  I love it because it reminds me of sunshine and yellow and summer and all things happy.  Simple.  Just the smell makes me happy!

LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL

In ancient times, the Egyptians and Romans used Lavender for bathing, relaxation, cooking, and as a perfume; it is widely used for its calming and relaxing qualities which continue to be Lavender’s most notable qualities. Lavender is frequently used to reduce the appearance of skin imperfections. Add to bath water to soak away stress or apply to the temples and the back of the neck. Add a few drops of Lavender to pillows, bedding, or bottoms of feet to promote a restful night’s sleep.

Lavender can be used on its own or with other oils.  For me, I think my mother used lavender that often that by itself I can't stand the smell so I mix it with peppermint.  I use lavender for relaxation and for a sleep aid.

I plan on doing some webinars really soon on the benefits of using essential oils so check back soon. I can't wait to share some of the things that I have learnt not just about what NOT to use but also which oils can really have an impact on your health.
